Subgingival scaling includes scraping subgingival calculus off the surface of the tooth. This can come from the crown's enamel or the root cementum surface, in which case root planing is used. There are two types of root planing or subgingival curettage. If open, some type of flap will have been created to enhance visibility and productivity. The illness process will continue if the inflammatory focus is not sufficiently removed. The pocket will get deeper if there is ongoing attachment loss. Use a subgingival curette (such as the Gracey curette SG 11/12 or 13/14) for subgingival scaling with hand tools. To remove as much debris and chronically irritated tissue as you can, position the blade at 45° to 90° to the root surface and pull forcefully against the tissue. Both of these tools and the ultrasonic tips can be used to shape root cement. A number of overlapping strokes may be necessary to completely smooth the root. Use the probe to once more check for smoothness.
