Subgingival scaling involves removing subgingival calculus from the tooth's surface. This may originate from the root cementum surface of the enamel of the crown, in which case root planing is employed. Root planing, also known as subgingival curettage, comes in two varieties. If open, a flap of some kind will have been designed to improve visibility and efficiency. If the inflammatory focus is not substantially eliminated, the sickness process will persist. If there is a continued connection loss, the pocket will grow deeper. For subgingival scaling using hand tools, use a subgingival curette (such as the Gracey curette SG 11/12 or 13/14). Position the blade at 45° to 90° to the root surface and pull firmly against the tissue to remove as much debris and chronically inflamed tissue as you can. Root cement can be shaped using both of these instruments as well as ultrasonic tips. To completely smooth the root, several overlapping strokes could be required. Check for smoothness once again with the probe.
